Dev Deepawali in Banaras

Dev Deepawali in Kashi

Dev Deepawali in Varanasi: A Celestial Manifestation in the City of Light

Dev Deepawali or Dev Deepawali in Varanasi is celebrated on Kartik Poornima, the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik, fifteen days after Diwali. Dev Deepawali is not standalone, in itself. It is celebrated on the last day of Ganga Mahotsav, which begins on Prabodhini Ekadashi (11th day of the Lunar month of Kartik) and ends in Dev Deepawali which will fall on November 15 this year. It is interesting to note that Dev Deepawali in Varanasi also coincides with Guru Nanak Jayanti and Jain Light Festival.

Dev Deepawali Date 2025
November 05, 2025

Not to be confused with Deepawali (or Diwali), Dev Deepawali or Dev Diwali in Varanasi is a festival celebrated every year on the occasion of Kartik Poornima. This happens to be 15 days after Diwali. This year, Dev Deepawali in Varanasi will be on November 05, 2025.

For most travellers and spiritual seekers alike, Varanasi is a dream destination. People from all over the world come and stay in this city for days, seeking spiritual peace, meditating on the banks of the Holy River Ganga and paying several visits to the temples in what is popularly known as the city of temples. Dev Deepawali in Varanasi or Dev Diwali is that time of the year when Varanasi truly seems like an abode of the Gods, not just of temples. Often known as the City of Light, Dev Deepawali is probably a manifestation of this very epithet.

Dev Diwali Pooja Date and Puja Timing | Dev Deepawali

Dev Diwali Pooja Date and Puja Timing | Dev Deepawali

Dev Diwali, also known as Dev Deepawali, is a magnificent festival that holds immense significance in the Hindu calendar, especially in the holy city of Varanasi. Celebrated in honor of Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasur, this festival marks the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. On this day, devotees offer prayers and light millions of diyas (oil lamps) along the ghats of the Ganges River, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The event is not only religious but also an awe-inspiring visual feast that attracts visitors from around the world.

Dev Diwali Date and Timing for 2025

In 2025, Dev Diwali will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 5. The timing for the puja on this auspicious day is as follows:

  • Pradoshakal Muhurat: 5:15 PM to 7:50 PM (Duration: 2 hours 35 minutes)
  • Purnima Tithi: Starts at 10:36 PM on November 4 and ends at 6:48 PM on November 5.

During this time, devotees perform various rituals and ceremonies to honor the gods and seek blessings for prosperity and spiritual upliftment. The puja is performed in the evening, and the Pradoshakal Muhurat is considered the most auspicious time to offer prayers and light diyas.

Significance of Dev Diwali

Dev Diwali is celebrated 15 days after Diwali, coinciding with the full moon night of Kartika month. The festival is particularly special in Varanasi, as it is believed that on this night, the gods descend to Earth to take part in the celebrations. The ghats of Varanasi are lit up with thousands of diyas, and temples are adorned with lights, making it one of the most visually stunning and spiritually uplifting experiences.

The lighting of diyas symbolizes the removal of darkness and ignorance, and the aarti performed on this night is a beautiful expression of devotion and reverence towards Lord Shiva. It is a time for people to come together in faith and celebrate the divine light that guides them through life.

How to Celebrate Dev Diwali

  • Performing the Pooja: On Dev Diwali, devotees gather by the Ganges River to perform aarti and other rituals, offering flowers, fruits, and diyas. Special prayers are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Ram, and Goddess Durga, seeking blessings for peace, prosperity, and spiritual growth.
  • Lighting Diyas: One of the most beautiful traditions of Dev Diwali is the lighting of diyas. Homes, temples, and ghats are illuminated with these little lights, which represent divine energy and the triumph of light over darkness.
  • Visiting Temples and Ghats: The ghats of Varanasi, especially Dashashwamedh Ghat, are bustling with activity during Dev Diwali. Pilgrims and visitors alike take part in the grand aarti, creating a vibrant and spiritual atmosphere that’s both peaceful and awe-inspiring.
  • Offering Prayers at Ram Janmabhoomi: Another important ritual is visiting the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya to pay respects to Lord Ram. Devotees offer prayers and light diyas to honor the divine.

Why Varanasi Celebrates Dev Diwali in a Unique Way

Varanasi, the city of lights, is renowned for its devotion and vibrancy. Dev Diwali in Varanasi is unlike any other, as the entire city comes alive with spiritual fervor and grand celebrations. The Ghats of Varanasi are the focal point of the festivities, where lakhs of diyas are lit in unison to celebrate the victory of good over evil.

On the night of Dev Diwali, the sight of the Ganges illuminated by thousands of diyas is a sight to behold. The Ganga Aarti, performed with much devotion and grace, is one of the highlights of the night. The spiritual vibrations of the place, combined with the beauty of the diyas, create an atmosphere of divine bliss that enchants everyone who visits.

Dev Diwali 2025: A Must-Experience Festival

If you are planning to witness this grand festival, 2025 offers a perfect opportunity to be part of the Dev Diwali celebrations. Whether you’re a devotee looking to seek blessings or a traveler fascinated by the cultural richness of Varanasi, Dev Diwali offers a unique spiritual experience.

Mark your calendar for November 5, 2025, and make sure you plan ahead to attend the Dev Diwali celebrations in Varanasi. This festival is not only an incredible religious experience but also a visual delight that will stay with you for a long time.

Dev Diwali Tips for Travelers

  • Arrive Early: The ghats get crowded, especially on Dev Diwali, so it’s advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot for viewing the aarti and lighting diyas.
  • Dress Modestly: Since this is a religious and spiritual event, it’s best to dress modestly and respectfully.
  • Book Accommodations in Advance: As Dev Diwali attracts a large number of pilgrims, it’s essential to book your accommodations in advance to ensure a comfortable stay.
  • Carry Cash and Essentials: Many local vendors don’t accept card payments, so it’s a good idea to carry cash and other essentials during your visit.

Conclusion

Dev Diwali is a truly unique and significant festival that blends devotion, culture, and spirituality in the heart of India’s most sacred city, Varanasi. With millions of diyas lighting up the night sky, the festival represents the triumph of light over darkness and divine blessings. Whether you’re visiting to participate in the pooja, enjoy the grandeur of the celebrations, or experience the soul-stirring atmosphere, Dev Diwali is an unforgettable experience that should be on every traveler’s bucket list.
